Artist Lecture
Let me just say that I do not enjoy most artist lectures here at MCA, I've been to very few that I thought were worth the money the school spends on them. I feel that the money would be better spent improving other aspects of the school...
David H. Clemons
Clemons started off by talking about his various inspirations and how they shaped his work, this went on for what seemed like an eternity before we got to his actual work. He apparently started out as a illustrator/painter, But abandoned it to pursue sculpture. The first concept that he went into great detail upon was racial identity, namely his odd fixation on an early band-aid advertisement with racial overtones. In which flesh tone equals white skin, I find it odd that out of all the racist advertisement at the time he went with this. I believe his series on how our perception of objects change given the location/situation they are placed in is much more powerful. He is really all over the place with his mediums even working in book art. (This was a decent Lecture)
Aric Mayer
Sadly Mayer Didn't talk about his work so much as his experiences with Katrina which was interesting, but really was not why I was there. When he did talk about his work he brought up the idea of how the disaster created this new environment of of its own. He talked about how odd it was to walk down the abandon streets and hear complete silence and he talked about how the news reports of looting and chaos where greatly exaggerated by the press. He insists that this disaster somehow has greater meaning (as in cosmic plan from god), and assumed that we automatically agree with this which kind of pissed me off. To me the only thing this means is we should stop deforestation and build better levees.
Polly Apfelbaum
A classic example of why I hate 99 percent of the artist lectures here, Apfelbaum seems incapable of talking about her own work. She even at one point refers to bright desaturated color as Power-puff girl colors. I also don't care about someone tie-dying spots on cloth or placing it randomly on the floor. It was interesting to see her work get more sophisticated like her Funky Town piece but she quickly abandoned that style.

Disappointment
I've come to realize that I'm horrible at directing myself (something I'll need to work on in the future), As I never seem to even get close to the bench marks I set for myself. On the plus side I made most of the corrections you wanted from last critique. But from here on out I really need to just need to use every available hour working on this project or else........

Upadate November 18

I decided that before I created any more assets I needed to nail down exactly what I'm going for. So I....
*Reworked some of my preexisting assets
*Created some test footage
*Reworked storyboard
I still intend to have the first scene done by the 23
11-16: At least 70% of assets finished
16-18: all assets finished
18-23: have at least the first scene done (and finish assets)
23-25: 2nd act at least halfway done
25-30:
*Thanksgiving week finish movie 100% (must be done by the 30th)
Note to self: Document my family cooking and how they made it (easy points are always good)
30-9:
*Revisions to movies and build DVD with remaining time

working toward Final
I didn't make my deadline for today (I was shooting for 70% but really only got 40% done), and this week will probably be more of the same. The good news however is once I turn in my BFA i'll have all the time in the world to devote to this class. For next class I'll finally finish the story board and get my assets up to at least 80%.

Color Rendering

No, I'm not doing Avatar (so no floating islands) I merely wished to show a few of the chunks of land that will be raise into the air due to the explosion. I've decided to focus more on the explosion and its destructive power.

Final pitch
My Intent:
Continuing with my theme of environment, this time I am showing the end of an environment. This is a expansion upon my After Effects fiasco project (I will not be reusing any of the assets from that project merely the idea) I intend to go beyond just showing the planet being destroyed. This time I'm going to show all the drama involved by zooming in and showing various cities, places, and people as they are being destroyed along with the planet. Basically showing the fiery cloud as it engulfs each place in turn, I’ll also focus on various individuals in their last moments and how they deal with their imminent destruction. It doesn’t matter if someone is Praying, taking shelter, or rich in the face of such destruction, everyone is equally dead (shit getting blown up).
*Predominantly action
Visually:
This project will be heavy on effects and I intend to make use of Maya. This will make it more useful for a demo reel as I intend to go into 3D animation. So its to my advantage to show that I can combine 3D with other medium and make use of related tools such as the vanishing point in Photo Shop. Most assets however will still be drawn in Photo Shop (they will be rendered fairly realistically).
(much like this video, I don't intend to skimp on the gore)
Basic story outline:
*Disaster begins (possible case might be an asteroid which I can create in Maya)
*Zoom into earth through particle clouds reveling a city about to be engulfed
*Hold hold until the fiery storm destroys cityscape
*Cut to street view of someone falling to their knees hopeless in the face of the fire ball.
*continue showing various people and places
*cut back to the world as viewed from space which is now sterilized of all life

Final project brainstorming
Considering I now have this nice fire effect that can be applied to anything(it would be a shame to just throw it away, although I might have to work with it to get it to look right within a less realistic world) I intend to show the destruction and renewal of an environment, This would keep with my chosen theme and would also allow me to continue to explore effects. I could show various animals running away from the blaze some succeeding some not.

Effects Fun!!!
This project was extremely interesting, I never would have imagined that After Effects was capable of this much before this project. I would really like to continue to explore effects and attempt to do something really advanced that requires some of the plug-ins and equipment that we don't have access to.
I utilized quite a few effects which include: turbulent displacement, Burr, particle world, fast burr, colorama, linear wipe, curves, glow, tint, shatter....
The fire effect is essentially the same texture on a linear wipe (with a tint and colorama) which is layered on top of itself with different effects applied through adjustment layers giving it the various aspects of fire and disintegration.
For example to get the effect of smoke a displacement map was used (warping the image just after the texture wipe as the image is fading).
the rest is straight forward

Typographic Animation
I'm happy with what I have, but the movie just needs more of everything. My original vision was to have the composition crawling with life and activity. I'm also not sure about the light blue background and I wonder if I should have just left it white. Also I found it hard to emulate some of the text effects we went over in class.
After effects also enjoyed closing on me a lot...

Typographic Animation Proposal
Here is a quick mock-up

Trying to Keep it simple, I've decided to build a basic character (a fish) out of text and place it within a environment. I really want to explore some of the various ways in which I can animate the text, as well as how I can utilize the various types of text to further the look I'm going for: thinking about how I can use hard edge text compared to more hand written designs.
For objects like the seaweed I've decided to use a similar effect to that of the elephant found within this video.

Midterm
A. My theme is ecosystems
However rather than create my own ecosystem I've decided to show the human habitat from an aliens perspective in documentary format, the intention being to follow around Joe loser's daily activity animal kingdom style (His failed attempts to mate, etc) and show it in a humorous way. This is really inspired by a cartoon I remember watching as a child, basically its a documentary made by aliens about the intelligent life on earth which they mistake to be cars/vehicles (reasoning that humans are merely parasites that live in and on the vehicles.)
Ideas:
*Mistaking drunken pissing for marking territory
*Bar fight as fighting for mating rights
*comically brief mating
B.
He is a fat middle aged jobless douche-bag who essentially sleeps all day in his own fifth only emerging at night to get drunk and attempt to get lucky but almost always fails, or perhaps he can find his female equivalent (maybe even pay)
1. his thinking is very primal (food, sex, sleep, this lends its self to following him around animal kingdom style.
2. Believes himself a genius very boastful(despite reality)
3. Same thing as a frat boy
4. In truth he is a little dead inside
C.

Act1: Emerges from his shelter ready to begin his night, seeks out the nearest bar and attempts to get lucky. Narrator will relate this to a nocturnal animal emerging to begin its activity and seek out food and water.
Act2: After several failed attempts and being turned down each time the protagonist makes the mistake attempting to come on to a larger male's mate which results in conflict. Protagonist retreats to lick his wounds. after which the protagonist picks up a hooker (the narrator will relate this to other animals who present offerings to their mates)
Act3: very brief mating and the male returns home just as the sun is rising to sleep and replete the cycle anew.

I really love the extreme gross close-ups found within Ren and Stimpy

*For my midterm project I intend to create an animation depicting a small creature, attempting to ward off intruders from it's home. However this creature defeats this purpose by showing off rather than actually guarding anything, going so far as to roar at small insect like creatures who do not possess any threat. While being engrossed in such displays his home is ransacked behind his back. I want this world to be alien one with its own ecosystem and creatures that are far removed from our everyday experience. The Idea of display comes from my research although here it is used in a different context in that rather than a display for matting its instead it is territorial.
*The theme is ecosystem
*I want to go for more of a hand drawn cutout aesthetics, here is a decent example

Preliminary character concept drawn using a mouse

I want to give him a high and mighty snotty appearance

masking vid
I attempted to show the development of a tree through masking.... Now that I'm done I realize that there is a lot more I could do to make this more visually interesting, such as animate the background or simply add more elements to the scene.

my proposal
Essentially my proposal is to craft my own universe, with its own ecosystems and symbiotic relationships. My intention is to really flesh-out how these complex organisms interact within this living system and develop narratives from this world.
Here is an artist who works within a similar manner http://www.biteycastle.com/biteyWindow.htm
While researching I found out a lot about sexual selection, which more often than not is just a display of some kind usually among males to attempt to attract females. These displays tend to have little benefit (some are even decremental) beyond matting. Because of this they are more often than not seasonal, occurring only during matting session as to minimize any negative effects they might have on an animal's chances of survival.I believe it would be interesting to develop a narrative around this

While revising my movie I fixed most of the issues discussed in class.. the background looks less like a filtered image, fixed my charters eyes as well as the look of the lilly pads, and I also had my character start way off in the distance.
